Sahai
Social
Aid for the Handicapped
And Infirm
(SAHAI) is a charitable Trust in Coimbatore,
South India, promoted by a group of professionals committed to the cause
of the Handicapped. It was formed to comprehensively rehabilitate the
increasing number of physically handicapped among the poor in India
who have become a liability to the family and the society.
There are over 40 million
physically disabled persons in our country. Most of them are economically
backward and have no hope for mobility, education, training or employment.
Among them the neglected are the Spinal Injured. Although reconstructive
surgery and physiotherapy are available, they are not affordable to
the weaker sections. Moreover it does not address the problem of rehabilitation
and financial independence. Against this background, a group of eminent
and socially committed doctors and philanthropists under the leadership
of Prof. Dr. Thomas Joseph (former professor of Neurosurgery, CMC Hospital,
Vellore), a renowned Neurosurgeon, promoted the SAHAI Trust in Coimbatore,
to reach out to the less fortunate among us. The Trust stands as the
bridge for the disabled, spanning between uselessness to usefulness,
hopelessness to hopefulness, unhappiness to happiness.
SAHAI mainly focuses on the
Spinal Injured who are paralyzed. A majority of these victims are young
adults, from the economically weaker section of society. Emphasis is
given for the best and effective mobility by restorative surgery and
physiotherapy. On gaining mobility of the limbs, the disabled are encouraged
to attend a vocational training commensurate with their education and
disability, aimed at getting a career opportunity. The Trust envisages
providing the entire course of rehabilitation absolutely free of cost.
Over 30 Surgeries have been conducted during the first year of the Trust's
existence. At any point of time 10 inpatients are being put through
a rehabilitation program at a leased out facility in J.M.Hospital, on
Thadagam Road, Coimbatore. A job oriented Computer Training program
for the disabled has also been started.

disabled, also intends to start, in the millennium year, an Industrial
