Arulmigu ThiruMuruganathaSwamy Temple - ThiruMuruganPoondi - Avinashi

This temple is located on the Coimbatore-Tiruppur Road, 5 Kms from Avinashi, in Thirumurgan Poondi.

This ancient temple was built in the 9th Century. According to epic, this was the place where 'Lord Muruga' installed a 'Siva Lingam' and worshipped. 'Lord Muruga' was sent with an army headed by Veerabahu by Lord Shiva to rescue Gods who were troubled by Soorapadma and his accomplice. It is believed that 'Lord Muruga' installed 'Lingam' to absolve Himself of mortal sin of mass killing.

Sundaramurthynayanar when on a pilgrimage to the holy shrines of 'Lord Shiva' in Kongunadu was way-laid by a hunter who robbed him of all his belongings and disappeared into the temple. Notwithstanding, Sundaramurthynayanar composed and sung expressing his sorrow and anguish and went on to say that it was a mockery that 'Lord Shiva's presence was in a notorious place.

But then it was 'Lord Shiva' Himself who was disguised as a hunter and He did so to hear the melodies and compositions of the saint. Pleased with the poignancy of the compositions the Lord returned of all his belongings. On understanding the divine purpose of the Lord, Sundaramurthynayanar composed and sung ten songs. This incident was marked as a festival called 'Vedapuri'.

Great sages 'Agasthya','Markendeya' and 'Dhurvasa' worshipped the Lord enshrined here. It is believed that saint 'Durvasa' planted Madhavi tree brought from heaven here.
